Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival → Bentota
Straight onto the southern expressway and out of the traffic within the hour. An afternoon on the river where it meets the sea.
Day 2
Lunuganga
A private morning at Geoffrey Bawa's country estate — the garden he worked on for fifty years and the clearest statement of what tropical modernism means. Mangrove boat on the Madu Ganga after, or nothing at all.
Day 3
Bentota → Galle
The coast road south to the fort. Check in inside the walls, then walk the ramparts as the light goes — the one hour of the Galle day that no photograph prepares you for.
Day 4
Galle
The fort on foot in the cool: Dutch Reformed Church, the lighthouse, the jewellers and the bookbinders. Afternoon at Handunugoda, where white tea is cut with gold scissors and never touched by hand.
Day 5
Unawatuna & Dalawella
A sheltered horseshoe of sand calm enough to swim all season, Jungle Beach over the headland, and turtles grazing the shallows at Dalawella. A cook's morning first: the market, then seven curries in someone's kitchen.
Day 6
Weligama → Mirissa
The bay that teaches the whole island to surf — a lesson if you want one, a long breakfast if you don't. Coconut Tree Hill in the late afternoon, before the queue forms.
Day 7
Mirissa: whales at dawn
Out before six with a licensed skipper. The continental shelf runs close to shore here, which is why blue whales pass within an hour of the harbour between November and April. Afternoon horizontal.
Day 8
→ Tangalle
East to where the coast empties out: a string of coves, one long wild beach, and Mulkirigala's rock temple inland. After dark, the Rekawa turtle watch — green turtles nesting on an unlit beach, with the project's ranger.
Day 9
Tangalle → Airport
An Ayurvedic treatment to start, then the expressway north. Roughly four hours door to terminal.
